Hyperfemininity is a sociological term describing the feminine in extreme. the hyperfeminine display femininity in an emphasized form to the point of self harm - common side effects are: eating disorders, cutting, general lack of mind body connection, distrust of other females, and a strong desire for external validation. However, these displays may be a subconscious protest against the restrictive body forms and social roles the feminine are forced to conform to. As exciting as I find hyperfemininity, what interests me more is the essential character of femininity. What is the nature behind the feminine ideal? There must be something beyond socialization. i started this blog with an intent - to explore the hyperfeminine display in the world of aesthetically organized photographs; historical, cultural, age specific, and gender specific imagery can be easily accessed and archived. I noticed symbolically feminine imagery (flowers, butterflies) found their way into the rotation as well as faceless, fragmented bodies, eerily skeletal bodies, bodies being suffocated, or bodies that are literally bound. In contrast, there is a preponderance of feminine bodies displaying masculine bahaviour (holding guns, smoking). There are also displays of a more traditional femininity - the nudes of the 20s and 30s are often more robust, bodies well suited for child bearing. the gist: this blog is a way for me to organize my understanding of femininity, explore different perceptions of femininity and to create an ultimate display of femininity - both hyper and 'normal'.
